Relocating to the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) is exciting, but the logistics can be overwhelming. You aren’t just moving boxes; you’re moving your life. You need to understand current DMV requirements, how school enrollment works with temporary housing, and which neighborhoods fit your daily routine.
Carolina Furnished Rentals (CFR) works with relocating guests across the Triangle. We created this guide as a starting point; official agencies and districts remain the source of truth for legal, licensing, and enrollment requirements.
Phase 1: The "Gap Housing" Strategy
Where should I live while I house hunt?
Don’t commit until you know the neighborhood.
The biggest mistake relocators make is signing a 12-month apartment lease or buying a home sight unseen.
- The Smart Move: Book a CFR Flex-Week Rental for 1–2 months. This gives you a “Base of Operations” in a real neighborhood.
- Why: You can drive the actual commute to RTP during rush hour (which is very different from the Sunday afternoon drive) and attend open houses without the pressure of a hotel checkout time.
Can I get mail at a temporary rental?
No.
CFR homes cannot be used as a mailing address. Guests are required to maintain a PO Box or alternate mailing address for mail and package delivery during their stay.
Phase 2: Schools & Residency
School enrollment
CFR provides a signed Vacation Rental Agreement that families may present as temporary proof of occupancy when speaking with local school districts.
Enrollment approval varies by district, and CFR homes cannot be used as a permanent mailing address.
How should I compare school districts?
It depends on your child and your priorities.
- High academic competition: West Cary (Green Level / Panther Creek)
- Arts-focused programs: Downtown Raleigh (Enloe Magnet) or Durham (Durham School of the Arts)
- Newer facilities: Apex (Apex Friendship) or Holly Springs
School assignments, zoning, and program availability are determined by each district and can change. Families should verify options directly with the school system before enrolling.

Utilities (The One-Bill Relief)
If you rent with CFR, you skip this step.
- Traditional Way: You spend hours on hold with Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, and the City of Raleigh to pay deposits and set up accounts.
- The CFR Way: Lights, water, gas, and high-speed internet are active when you walk in. You pay one bill to us. We handle the bureaucracy.
DMV & Driver's License
Do this immediately.
Residency and licensing deadlines can change and depend on your circumstances. Check the current North Carolina DMV requirements before acting.
- Tip: You must have proof of liability insurance (from your car insurer) before you can get a license.
- Before you go: Check the official DMV appointment system, office services, and current wait information rather than relying on an old office comparison.
Healthcare
You are in the City of Medicine.
- Raleigh/Cary: Served primarily by WakeMed and UNC Rex.
- Durham: Served by Duke University Health and the Durham VA.
- Tip: Establish a primary care doctor early. New patient wait times can be 2-3 months in the Triangle.
